Castellar, Castillon, Sospel and Monti: united by the history of this great Byzantine family
The Lascaris family are descendants of the Byzantine family who produced several Nicaean (Greek) emperors. One of them, Theodore II Lascaris, had a daughter – Eudoxie – who married Count Guillaume-Pierre of Vintimille (in Italy) in 1261.
The Lascaris- Vintimilles, joint lords of Castellar, were prolific.
They generated multiple branches of the family, including many famous names from the church, military and legal professions, as well as numerous knights of Malta.
One of these was Jean Paul Lascaris of Castellar, who was the 57th grand master of the Order. The towns and villages of the Menton countryside all share a joint history thanks to the Lascaris family.
